impressionism in paris

Paris 1874: Inventing Impressionism – an exhibition.

150 years ago, on April 15, 1874, the first impressionist art show started in Paris. Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Pissarro, Sisley, and Cézanne, eager for freedom, decided to break the rules and have their own exhibition outside the official ones. This is when impressionism began. To celebrate this special anniversary, the Musée d’Orsay is showing about 130 artworks and looking at this important date with a new perspective, considering it the day that started the avant-garde movements.

Paris 1874” looks back on why 31 artists (only seven of them are famous worldwide now) came together to show their artworks. This time was after two wars: the Franco-German War of 1870 and a harsh civil war. During this crisis, artists started to think differently about their art and try new things.
